In this lesson, we’re starting out, assuming that you know nothing about scales. So, let’s answer the question that a vast majority of beginners ask: “what is a scale?”<\/em><\/p>\n

A Short Note On The Musical Scale<\/h2>\n

The term scale <\/em>is derived from the Latin word scala <\/em>which means ladder or staircase.<\/p>\n

Believe it or not, the musical scale has a lot to do with the staircase and you’ll understand that in a better light as we proceed.<\/p>\n

Here’s the definition of a scale:<\/p>\n

A scale is a product of the progression of notes in ascending or descending order, based on a fixed formula.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The part of the definition of a scale that says “progression of notes” <\/em>talks about the nature of scale. Scales are melodic in nature and this explains why the notes of a scale are played or heard successively.<\/p>\n

The part of the definition of a scale that says “ascending or descending” <\/em>talks about the direction of a scale. A scale can either ascend or descend.<\/p>\n

The part of the definition of a scale that says “fixed formula” <\/em>talks about the distance between the successive notes of a scale.<\/p>\n

Playing all the white notes on the keyboard successively<\/strong> from C to C:

\n…in ascending or descending<\/strong> direction, using a fixed formula<\/strong> produces a scale.<\/p>\n

Although there are a variety of scales, our focus in this lesson is on the major scale. So, let’s proceed to the study of the major scale.<\/p>\n

The Major Scale – Explained<\/em><\/h2>\n

The major scale is an outline of all the notes in the major key, starting from the tonic (which is the key center) to its octave (which is a duplicate of the tonic.)<\/p>\n

The most universal major scale is the C major scale:

\n…which is an outline of all the notes in the C major scale:

\n…starting from C (which is the key center:
\n
\n…and ending on C (the octave):

The Formula Of The Major Scale<\/h3>\n

The formula of the major scale is derived from the\u00a0 distance between its successive tones. For example, in the C major scale:

\n…is a whole-step.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The distance between D to E:
\n
\n…is a whole-step.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The distance between E to F:

\n…is a half-step.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The distance between G to A:
